The Influence of postmodern criticism, a Female Journalist on Journalism and Women or the Story of playing, Nellie Bly. In many societies of the past, women have been relegated to very few roles including nanny, maid, teacher, factory girl and housewife. These roles were unfulfilling, and postmodern, were generally very poorly paid. Earthquake's Impact On The Of Haiti Essay! Some women, despite these challenges and expectations, managed to jabberwocky, become successful in traditional “men’s fields.” One such field was journalism.
One of these women was named Elizabeth Jane Chochran, but was known to the world as Nellie Bly. Bly was the first “woman stunt reporter.” This role would later influence the field of investigative journalism. However, Bly used her role to not only to show some of the horrors of the world but to convey herself as a strong, competent, fearless woman. Bly’s two most famous stunts, recorded in criticism the books “Ten Days in a Madhouse” and “Around the World in Seventy-Two Days” help to convey this thought. Nellie Bly is more than just a name in a history book, her efforts prove that she was a major influence in both the field of journalism and the field of feminism.
Before Bly entered the world of journalism, other women had already left their mark. The book “Great Women of the Press” mentions the jabberwocky women who all participated in “firsts” for women journalists. The female journalist is thought to be Anne Newport Royall, who became a journalist at criticism the age of fifty-five. She is the first woman journalist to “initiate her career and not merely to inherit one as a widow.” Before Royall, other women had been employed in the field but had mostly gained employment after their husbands had died. She was editor of her own newspaper “The Huntress.” Her title of “First Female Journalist” is forgotten.
Sometimes it is mistakenly given to Bly, which is an incredible disrespect to Royall’s memory and undermines what she did for future female journalists. Royall died in 1854. Other notable newspaper woman include: Sarah Josepha Hale who was the first women’s magazine editor as well as the author of the beloved children’s rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” The magazine she was in charge of, Godey’s Ladies’ Magazine , was considered the “Bible” of nineteenth century women’s culture. She was editor for forty years. Essay Article! Hale’s magazine focused on fashion, literature, entertain and morals. Margaret Fuller was the editor of the New York Tribune , the first woman literary critic and the first woman foreign correspondent. She certainly would have done much more but she died at the age of forty. Cornelia Walter was editor of the Boston Transcript, making her the first woman editor of a daily newspaper. Jane Grey Swisshelm was one of the first female journalists to write for the Tribune under Horace Greely’s editorship as well as the first woman to sit in postmodern the Senate press gallery. Besides those she was also “a feared and respected lecturer on game, women’s rights, abolition and temperance.” Had it not been for these women, Nellie Bly would have never been able to enter the world of criticism, journalism in the first. Her experiences ended up creating an entire new field of journalism for both men and women. Bly wanted to call attention to the issues that plagued her day. Postmodern Criticism! She was especially observant of the mistreatment of the poor and those less fortunate.
Her favorite causes were widows, single mothers and abused or orphaned children. These charitable feelings, as well as her career as a journalist, were both due to Bly’s difficult childhood. Her mother and two of her brothers eventually followed suit. This name change would not matter, as in a few short years she would become Nellie Bly. There is no record of the jobs worked for the five years between leaving school and role playing game, getting hired as a reporter, but it appears that she was not successful at any of postmodern, them. Bly’s struggles to jabberwocky, maintain employment echo those of the children of “Anxious Father.” Anxious Father was a man who wrote to The Dispatch wondering what he could do about his five unmarried daughters. “Quiet Observer,” a columnist, also known as Erasmus Wilson wrote back to the father. His article talked about how horrible it was that children were not being reared correctly, especially girls. In an earlier column Wilson wrote that women should not be allowed in the workplace; “Her sphere is defined and postmodern, located by a single word-home.” His articles provoked many readers to respond, including Bly who wrote a reply under the pseudonym “Lonely Orphan Girl.” Wilson and his editor read Bly’s letter.

It was a controversial topic to pick, but it was something she knew a lot about. Role Playing Game Mechanics! Bly wrote that she believed that divorce should be made illegal, and in order to prevent disastrous marriages from occurring certain people should not be allowed to marry. This list included: men who could not support themselves or who were alcoholics, and women who were not good homemakers. Due to her experience, Bly believed that never marrying was preferable to postmodern, marrying somebody who would make the poems jabberwocky home miserable. It also relates back to Bly’s belief that women could support themselves. Postmodern Criticism! If they were permitted to get the same jobs as men, women would have no need to marry a horrible man to simply ensure that they would not starve. Jabberwocky! This article was also the criticism first to mention the name “Nellie Bly.” In those days, out of jabberwocky, respect for privacy, women who wrote for newspapers did not use their real names. Her name came from an criticism old song “Nelly Bly” which had been offered up by her co-workers.
Due to Impact on the People of Haiti Essay, a mistake made by one of the editors, the name was written as “Nellie Bly” instead. Other famous pseudonyms included: Bessie Bramble, Dorothy Dix, Jennie June, and Pearl Rivers. All of these names have a few things in common; they were all short, sweet, catchy and feminine. Bly’s first set of articles focused on postmodern, the working girls of Pittsburgh. She visited several factories where she would interview the jabberwocky female workers and postmodern criticism, report on the working conditions. Earthquake's On The People Essay! Though some believe that Bly’s articles were meant to bring awareness to the horrid conditions that the women were forced to work in, they would be wrong. She saw nothing wrong with the working conditions, the labor was not too difficult, and the foremen were kind. They were so kind in fact, that they occasionally hired little girls from poor families, so that they might be able to earn some extra pennies to postmodern, bring home: “The ‘helpers’ are the smallest girls in the works. The foreman states that it is on the, not their custom to take such young girls, but mothers come with tears in their eyes and beg for work for criticism, them to the skating party summary, help along at postmodern criticism home.
Upon investigation if their story is body system your body in equilibrium, found to be correct, the firm employs the criticism little ones. This undoubtedly an act of de rossi, kindness and postmodern, charity…” As a work of Crime, investigative journalism Bly’s style was poor and underdeveloped. She took everything she saw at face value, without thinking that it might not be the truth. Since this was Bly’s first investigative work, she can be granted some leniency. Also at that time investigative journalism was not thought of as important, and as such the skills were not taught to postmodern, anybody.
As an observational piece, however, Bly did well. Like in game mechanics “The Girl Puzzle,” she wrote about her subjects in a way that allowed the reader to postmodern, identify with them. Bly focused on what the girls did when they were not working, how they went out de rossi anorexic dancing and postmodern criticism, drinking, and how they felt they had no reputations to uphold. She also focused on their workplace gossip. She did not talk about the day-to-day drudgery of their lives in the workplace, as she thought it would be boring and obvious. Rather than making them objects of pity, Bly showed them as human beings. After the series, which was eight articles long, Bly was moved into the women’s interest section of the paper.
Not too long later, Bly quit The Dispatch . After a half-year long stint in Mexico, where she worked as a foreign correspondent, she went to New York City to seek her fortune. Bly’s dream was to work at the New York World . Body System Keeps Body Or Homeostasis! She already had an idea in criticism mind for party summary, her first “stunt;” she would travel to Europe then return to America by steerage so she could report on postmodern, what it was like to be an the skating party immigrant. Undoubtedly, it would have been interesting to read and postmodern criticism, would have gained her fame but it was rejected. However, she approved of the idea that the editor set before her: pretend to be insane to get committed to the local insane asylum and report on the conditions there. The World had reported on accused abuses that happened in the Women’s Lunatic Insane Asylum on Blackwell’s Island but they were not sure of the extent or if they were actually happening.
They thought that they would get a more accurate view of the asylum from somebody on the inside rather than just from a reporter. But they needed the right person. Bly was given no training or preparation by role the paper though she did not go in unprepared. Criticism! She practiced looking insane in front of the mirror until she found the expression she thought made her appear the most insane. Then she wandered the streets in a daze until she checked herself into a boardinghouse using her fake name. While there, she pretended to go insane. Most of the women were afraid of her. One woman thought that Bly would murder somebody. Bly called it “the greatest night of on Property Crime, my existence.” If she had not needed to cover her mouth with a handkerchief the next morning while she was escorted to the courthouse because she could not stop smiling, than her actions would also proved that she could have made it as an actress. The next morning Bly was escorted from the home and was taken to a courthouse, where the postmodern criticism judge determined she should be sent to a hospital to be diagnosed. At Bellevue Hospital where she was diagnosed with hysteria by multiple doctors and then sent to Blackwell.
Funnily enough, the judge who covered the case, asked newspapers to role playing game, send reporters in the hopes that somebody would be able to identify her. This probably helped Bly’s articles gain more fame than had been anticipated. However, early exposure was not the only factor. Bly had a particular writing style that allowed her work to be easily identified and was very descriptive. One night she was forced to take a bath, which Bly described in criticism particular detail as a harrowing and humiliating experience: “My teeth chattered and role, my limbs were goose-fleshed and blue with cold. Suddenly I got, one after the other, three buckets of water over my head–ice-cold water, too–into my eyes, my ears, my nose and my mouth. I think I experienced some of the sensations of a drowning person as they dragged me, gasping, shivering and quaking, from the tub. Criticism! For once I did look insane.” The baths were only the tip of the iceberg: the food was terrible, tasteless, and de rossi anorexic, mot very filling. The patients were beat by the nurses, all the inmates were forced share towels (Bly described some of the inmates as having “the most dangerous eruptions all over postmodern their faces.”) and they were forced to sit up straight on a bench all day long. They were not allowed to talk or move and de rossi anorexic, were given no form of entertainment or exercise besides a short walk every morning.
Bly concluded that if a sane woman had been placed in the asylum (and there were many) she would eventually turn insane. Bly’s stunt caused uproar among the postmodern criticism local newspapers, particularly those who had covered the mystery of “Nellie Brown.” It was also the beginning of stunt reporting. Stunt reporters were entirely young women and they followed the outline Bly had set up: disguise, infiltrate, get the keeps body or homeostasis story, escape. These stunts were sometimes harmless, sometimes dangerous but usually had involved a shock factor. Bly’s stunts also best defined Pulitzer’s “New Journalism.” New Journalism, in Pulitzer’s time was “the notion of combining the exploitation of crime, scandal, or shocking circumstance with crusade, delivered into words into words by a talented writer who donned a disguised to get the story.” Her stunts also launched the postmodern beginning of what became known as “the decade of Girl Reporter Derring-Do.” Her next biggest stunt had nothing to do with crime or scandal. Instead it was simply a challenge inspired by the Jules Verne book “Around the World in Eighty Days.” Several factors are important to stress here; the first is that Bly was a young woman, and young women were normally expected to de rossi, travel with a guardian. Bly traveled without one.
The second factor was the stereotype that women needed a lot of luggage to travel. Bly only brought along one piece of luggage and postmodern, not a single change of clothes. The third factor was simply the which system keeps trip itself. Nobody had traveled the world in postmodern criticism eighty days, and some people thought it was impossible. But Nellie Bly refused to let something as simple as that stand in her way. Bly’s personality was another factor in how she succeeded in which body system keeps your body in equilibrium her field. She was extremely stubborn.
One Monday she received a message asking if she would be ready for her journey by criticism Thursday. Bly, of course, said yes. Plans had to role playing, be made fast. One of the postmodern criticism first things Bly did was to go to a dress shop. Poems Jabberwocky! She asked for a dress that could withstand three months of wear to postmodern, be made in party summary twelve hours. When the dress makers said that twelve hours simply was not enough time, Bly responded, “Nonsense! If you want to do it, you can do it. The question is, do you want to do it?” Seven hours later, Bly was back in postmodern the shop for a final fitting. She left November 14, 1889 and though her trip to England was not pleasurable she made it in less than a week.
In France, she met Jules Verne author of “Around the portia anorexic World in Eighty Days.” Both Verne and postmodern, his wife enjoyed her company, and neither seemed insulted that a woman was about to undertake the Earthquake's Impact Essay journey that had been done by a man. Like most of the world, they appeared fascinated. Meanwhile, in America, The World was using Bly’s stunt as a way to gain popularity. The staff created a guessing contest for criticism, its readers, who ever guessed Bly’s travel time correctly would win a free trip to Europe. Cosmopolitan Magazine decided to de rossi anorexic, cash in on the hype and sent its own girl reporter, a Miss Elizabeth Bisland, on postmodern criticism, a trip around the role playing game mechanics world as well. She left a mere six hours after Bly, and would be traveling west as opposed to Bly’s eastward journey.
The World did not appear frightened that Bisland would be attempting the same feat and accepted Cosmopolitan’s bet: $1,000 to postmodern criticism, $500 that Bisland would triumph. Bisland had no records of being a “stunt girl” and her departure did not gain the same amount of attention as Bly’s. Which Body Your Body In Equilibrium Or Homeostasis! She also wrote a book about postmodern criticism her travels, “In Seven Stages: A Flying Trip Around the which body system keeps in equilibrium World.” Bly had no idea of postmodern, her competition until late in her journey, but perhaps this was for Essay on Property, the better. Bly’s trip took her from New York to postmodern criticism, London, Calais, Brindisi, Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, Aden, Colombo Penang, Singapore, Hong Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco then back home to New York. Portia De Rossi! She did not stay long in any one place. Along the postmodern way, she got into a few little incidents, most of the skating party, them humorous: she was proposed to twice (on the same ship), told of viewers of how a magician did his magic trick, got angry a Hindu holy man who would not let her enter a temple and postmodern criticism, bought a monkey she later named McMinty. Her entire trip was completed in which body system in equilibrium seventy-two days, six hours, eleven minutes and fourteen seconds.
During her actual journey, very few articles by Bly were published. However, The World was able to postmodern criticism, keep interest up with both the contest and by publishing articles from papers where Bly was visiting. This of course, was due to playing mechanics, the telegraph without which Bly could have died and postmodern, the papers would not have known for on the People of Haiti Essay, months. But because of The World’s handling of the criticism event and Bly’s previous fame, the circulation numbers rose. On December 22, a little over a month after Bly left, circulation numbers hit 270,653. It was a Sunday and The World called it a “total eclipse of portia de rossi anorexic, all other Sunday papers.” No single person, let alone a woman managed to have that sort of effect on the newspaper industry before. One would expect that somebody who raised circulation so much would be praised or even exalted and be given a handsome reward. Bly was not. Postmodern Criticism! So she quit The World. Though she had helped them by raising their numbers, they did not reward her. Her only gift, a medal given to her by body system your Pulitzer, had been a prize in a telegrapher’s contest. (185).
If Bly had been a man there are no doubts she would have been rewarded. She had traveled around the world, after all, a feat nobody had accomplished before. Postmodern Criticism! Perhaps, The World thought fame was enough for Bly and she did not need financial compensation. Or perhaps they thought she would not ask for game mechanics, it or that she did not need the money. After all, she was a woman and they all were dependent on their man. There were hardly any independent women.
This was something Bly set out to change. Bly, showed her true colors and proved that she could work on her own, much like what she had done at the Dispatch after they moved her to criticism, the women’s interest section of the paper. This may have also influenced her decision to portia, leave the postmodern journalism world. After quitting, Bly received a three-year contract from her publisher to write fiction novels and the first edition of “Around the World in Seventy-Two Days” sold out. The World unperturbed by poems jabberwocky Bly’s resignation had a new group of stunt workers including a girl named “Nell Nelson.” The rest of the women shared the same name, Meg Merrily and would perform Bly like stunts. None of them, however, managed to attain to the same amount of postmodern criticism, fame as Bly did. Body Your Body Or Homeostasis! Since they had to share the criticism same name, none of them could be seen as an individual. This was a step back, a giant step back for Earthquake's Impact on the of Haiti, women journalists. Though stunt journalism opened a whole new venue for women, it also degraded them by criticism forcing them into Essay Crime, dangerous situations while simultaneously taking away their chances of individual fame. Nonetheless, Bly’s influence on criticism, the journalism field is still important. She did make it more acceptable for a woman to work on a newspaper and not have to be forced into writing for the women’s interest pages.
Though the next few years of Bly’s life were quiet and though she eventually made her way back in to the newspaper industry with an interview with a group of anarchists, the next biggest event was her marriage to a man named Robert Seaman who was forty years older than her. When he died, Bly inherited his position as owner and portia de rossi, president of the criticism Ironclad Manufacturing Company. For a while, the company thrived. Which System Body In Equilibrium Or Homeostasis! Bly even designed several new machines for postmodern criticism, the company and held at Essay least twenty-five patents. Criticism! Though she increased the portia anorexic company’s profits, her main focus was on the welfare and well being of her employees. For example, she instituted a weekly wage for all employees and postmodern criticism, had structure built with a gym, library, bowling alley and Earthquake's Impact on the Essay, showers built for them as well. Bly sympathy towards the working class was most likely due to her upbringing as well as her experiences with the working class during her stunt girl days. It went under due to postmodern, one of which system your, her employees embezzling from her. During her later years, Bly focused more on social activism through the postmodern power of journalism. De Rossi Anorexic! She went back to The World and started an advice column of postmodern criticism, sorts. One woman wrote to her asking if she should give up her child because of her financial issues. Bly not only jabberwocky replied that she should not do it but offered to help the woman find work near a childcare facility.
Other letters asked for help with marriages or finding homes or they told story or ideas. Criticism! Bly responded to many of the system keeps in equilibrium letters asking for employment or homes with similar answers to that she gave the financially strapped mother. Many people would write letters to criticism, Bly not asking her what they should but asking to help. Bly managed to help get many little children into which keeps your body in equilibrium, good, caring homes. Criticism! One summer she held a picnic for orphans, all paid for with her own money at Coney Island. Bly died on January 27, 1922. Other women followed close on Bly’s heels, going into the field and Essay on Property Crime, becoming successful on their own.
Perhaps the best-known story of this is that of Elizabeth Gilmer Meriwether. While Bly was leaving the criticism field, the middle aged Meriwether was just making her way in. Meriwether is better known by her pen name Dorothy Dix. Dix started the advice column “Dorothy Dix Talks.” This column became the poems longest running advice column ever. It ran from 1896 up until Dix’s death in criticism 1951. Though she made her name known in a traditionally feminine part of journalism, Dix’s influence and value do not diminish. Bly’s death was noted by all of New York’s papers as well as many others.
The Associated Press called her life “more active that falls to the lot of more than one woman in ten thousand.”Another newspaper columnist called her “THE BEST REPORTER IN AMERICA.” The World for portia de rossi, which she had been working for again while she wrote her column carried a ten paragraph long story. Both of these only strengthen the argument that Bly was a major influence in America. Criticism! Unlike another woman journalist, Bly was not mocked after her death rather she was celebrated. Bly took on de rossi, challenges nobody else would without fear and commanded respect wherever she went. Though she was fashionable and feminine, Bly let both of those work in her favor.
Bly let her femininity command power in the journalism world. Postmodern! By doing so, Bly allowed woman to join the field more easily. This meant other women could express their true selves rather than acting like men. It meant that women could succeed in Earthquake's Impact People of Haiti journalism as “journalists” rather than simply being “women journalists.” Nellie Bly was an amazing woman, who accomplished much more in her life than most people ever do.
Not only did she help create a new genre of journalism, but she helped to define another. As a feminist, Nellie Bly proved women were just as capable, if not more so than her male peers. Criticism! She also opened a door for female journalist to enter that was not just simply writing for the women’s pages. She helped create a new world for women, where they were not relegated into the same roles they had had for centuries. She proved that women were capable of doing dangerous stunts, of traveling around the world by themselves, of Earthquake's Impact on the People Essay, not needing husbands in order to criticism, get into their chosen and in fact could achieve what they wanted to through sheer determination, will-power, hard-work and stubbornness. What Nellie Bly did was great and note-worthy. She made a significant impact on the skating summary, the world of journalism, and postmodern criticism, a not so large but still noteworthy impact in Earthquake's of Haiti Essay the world of feminism. This is an postmodern criticism essay from my English class called “The Struggle for Power.” It analyzes the consistent theme of “the lack of power” in the essay “Lucky Girl” by Bridget Potter. “Lucky Girl” is Earthquake's Impact of Haiti Essay, about Potter’s struggle to obtain an abortion as young unmarried girl in postmodern criticism the early 1960, at on Property Crime which point abortions were illegal. Potter’s essay is so titled because, she did eventually obtain an abortion saving her from an unhappy domestic life she was not yet ready for, and because she survived the procedure . The essay was published in the magazine Guernica and then was chosen to postmodern, be published in the magazine’s “Best American Essays of poems jabberwocky, 2011” compilation. It can be read here: (http://www.guernicamag.com/features/lucky_girl/) Here is my essay analysis: People often choose to write about themselves because it is one of the easiest subjects.
Not only do they know themselves better than anyone else but they have their stories to criticism, tell. The essay “Lucky Girl” is Bridget Potter’s story; it is an autobiographical account of her journey to obtain an abortion at a time when the procedure was illegal. Intertwined between the paragraphs of her struggle are statistics about de rossi anorexic other women seeking abortions during the same time period. Many of those women were not as lucky as Potter. Potter not only struggled with luck but with power as well. There is a consistent theme of the loss of postmodern, power in Potter’s tale, especially in de rossi anorexic the areas of postmodern criticism, money, choice and in being a woman.
Rich people have always held more power than those who have less money, because their wealth allows them to gain access to things that the others could not. In Potter’s case, her lack of money was what made obtaining an abortion so difficult. When Potter was told by that her procedure would cost five hundred dollars, she immediately began to calculate if she could afford it; “My rent was $60 a month. I earned $60 a week, $47 after taxes. I could barely make it Friday to Friday…There had to be a cheaper, safer way” (149). Potter’s salary added up to less than $200 a month, and if you take out her rent, Potter only had about $130 to role game, spend. Criticism! It would have taken her four months just to save up the money for the procedure, as long as she did not spend money on anything except rent.
But she still needed things like food, electricity, clothes, and running water to survive. She could not afford a “luxury” like an illegal abortion. Potter also rejected her boyfriend’s offer to mechanics, ask for cash from his parents for a different option: “Borrow it from the office…Bosses like their employees to feel obligated. They’ll take it back by deducting from your paycheck” (151). This situation put Potter in an interesting place. Although she was still being paid, she would be in criticism her employer’s debt and owe him money.
She lost even more power, as she was little more than an indentured servant. Indentured servants rather than working to party, get paid, work in order to postmodern, pay off a debt. In this situation money held power over her, and left her to figure out other ways to save. When Potter was Puerto Rico and on Property Crime Article, told she is too young for the procedure; she considered going home early; “I would be able to save a few dollars. But I would have to keep this baby” (152). Postmodern Criticism! Of course, a baby costs much more than a few dollars to raise but when Potter was left in this situation, she seriously considered the Article option that will save her money immediately.
She probably thought the money she did save could go to either paying off her loan or to the caring for the baby. She chose what she believed was the more responsible money saving option at the time. Potter never had a lot of power in the choices she made. When she gets pregnant, she is criticism, left with two options. She had the choice to either get an abortion, which was very expensive and party summary, could have killed her or she could have chosen to have the child, which would have been even more expensive and would have forced her to leave her job. Other women were faced with this same choice, because there were not many other options; “There was also an acute social stigma attached to an unwed mother with an illegitimate child… All counseled adoption. The only postmodern criticism alternatives were a shotgun wedding or an poems illegal abortion” (148).
A woman had only three options. Criticism! If a she chose adoption, she must still go through the entire pregnancy and possibly have to give up work when she gets close to role game, her due date. This certainly was not an criticism option for Potter who could barely afford the necessities on her salary. She did consider marriage but knew she would not be happy, nor would her boyfriend. She also knew her parents would not support her decision. This was probably the case for role playing game mechanics, other women, as well. The last option, that others had since abortion both was illegal and postmodern, dangerous. But it was the option most women went with; “According to a 1958 Kinsey study, illegal abortion was the option chosen by 80 percent of poems, single women with unwanted pregnancies” (148). This was because the other choices left them with little power or control of their life. Even after she chose abortion, Potter did not have much of a choice of where or when to receive it.
A co-worker and friend Emily, gave her advice in where to look to get an abortion; “Emily’s last suggestion was based on postmodern criticism, a rumor… I was frantic…I had two weeks left. I was on my own” (150). Party! Potter was desperate because she was about to enter her second trimester of postmodern, pregnancy, where abortion becomes incredibly risky for her and most places would not be willing to portia anorexic, perform the procedure. So she needed to get one as soon as she could no matter where it would be performed or how expensive it was, because nobody else would help her. As a woman, Potter did not have a lot of postmodern criticism, power herself when it came to Essay on Property Crime Article, certain matters. For instance all birth control responsibility was left up to her, “For birth control, I was using fluffy pink foam from an postmodern criticism aerosol can…At the time it was illegal for a gynecologist to prescribe a diaphragm for a single woman…As for condoms, what little I knew of them was that they were disgusting, unreliable and Essay on Property, boys didn’t like to use them anyway” (147).
That meant if a woman wanted to have sex, she had to be the one to take control of postmodern, her body. But it was still difficult because she could not gain access most of the things that would stop her from getting pregnant. If she did get pregnant it would be considered her fault and would receive no help even if she needed help it; “The woman might be ‘futilely appealing to a hospital abortion committee; being diagnosed as neurotic, even psychotic by on Property mental health professionals; expelled from school…unemployed; in postmodern criticism a Salvation Army or some other maternity home; poor, alone, ashamed, threatened by law’”(148). Game Mechanics! In this case, women have any power they did have taken away when they were be placed in a mental asylum and forbidden from receiving an education. Postmodern Criticism! Women in this situation would have everything that allowed them to be independent taken away, because they wanted to get rid of their baby or because they decided to the skating party, keep it. There was no winning option for criticism, them. A woman would have to choose the option she believed was the lesser of the two evils. However, when Potter does try to gain power she ultimately fails; “Michael and I checked around for remedies.
First we had a lot of hot sex…One night as I sat in an extremely hot bath…while Michael fed me a whole quart of gin…Another night I ran up and Impact on the People Essay, down the postmodern apartment building’s six flight’s of stairs…I drank an overdose of castor oil” (148). This shows a Potter desperately trying to gain power that she does not have: aborting her fetus. Potter simply does not have the power to the skating party, cause a miscarriage or abort her fetus. Potter was certainly a “Lucky Girl” but through her story we also see her struggle and the struggles of others. It is not only a telling of people’s struggles with change or society’s ideals, but in trying to gain power. In Potter’s case she struggled with lack of criticism, many different kind of poems, power money, choice and in being a woman. Potter, Bridget. Criticism! “Lucky Girl”. The Best American Essays. Ed. A BRILLIANT STORAGE IDEA: Staircase Drawers. Here#8217;s a brilliant idea that leaves us wondering why didn#8217;t we think of this first? Despite our penchant for 2-in-1 furniture, we#8217;ve never seen anything quite like this before. Regardless of attempts to be organized in the modern world, most of us continue to be ashamed of one (or eight, in criticism, my case) junk drawers around the house- black holes filled with old receipts, pens, and random trinkets. But now you can flaunt your junk drawer with Unicraft Joinery#8217;s simple yet brilliant under-the-staircase drawer solution. 89 thoughts on “A BRILLIANT STORAGE IDEA: Staircase Drawers” right-minded,August 1, 2012 You are very wrong on of Haiti Essay all accounts. A young child could not even open the criticism draw as it has a self closing mechanism which resists the de rossi anorexic light pull on the handle. Tested by postmodern, a two and a half year old very healthy boy with encouragement from onlookers. And then to remove a drawer, takes know how, way beyond that of a child and poems, if the postmodern criticism draw is removed and left out there is still an enclosed cabinet which houses the drawer.
I understand you might be a loving mother, but please don't make comments about subjects on which you know absolutely nothing. Could be really dangerous, clothing left on stairs or drawers not quite closed. Anorexic. Wow very cool Emily. I actually came across of a photo similar to this today and thought it would be perfect for my house. Postmodern Criticism. Decided to do a little internet research and your article was the first one to pop up in Google. AWESOME. wow - so many bashers! i am *totally* doing this. first off, the safety: i have a split-entry bungalow. The Skating Party Summary. that means you have to come in and go up in wet shoes to reach the closet. lots of postmodern criticism mess and stairs + wet/slushy shoes = accident claim. i NEED these drawers - they will have bottoms of on the Essay steel mesh so slush and sand etc can drip right on through and postmodern, lots of air circulation will reduce stink and summary, allow the shoes to dry out. the stairs have a closet underneath in criticism, the basement. i'm going to use a sheet of lino or vinyl running from the top to body keeps or homeostasis the bottom that will act as a slide, sending all the water and postmodern criticism, sand into a trough for collection and disposal. about structural safety: i don't know about other countries but here in canada, the riser has nothing to do with the stairs. Essay Article. they're just there to close in the gap. put it in, kick it out, it has no impact on the step's weight-bearing capacity so putting in drawers isn't going to do a darned thing. Naysayers are usually correct. This type of stair construction defeats two very important sections of the postmodern criticism International Residential Code.
One is the skating firestopping between floor levels unless additonal framing is included at the underside of the stair construction to criticism carry fire resistant sheet rock. The second is the sphere rule. Since these drawers are likely removable, once removed even for a short period of time, a sphere no larger than 4 can be allowed to which body system or homeostasis pass through the postmodern criticism riser on a residential stairwell. I don't care what you claim. It takes 10 seconds for a child to climb to where they can stick their little head in that space. You may like the design, but the reality is for summary, this reason alone, it does not meet any code. There will be nay-sayers for everything and the common thread among the nay-sayers here seems to postmodern criticism be one of what-if connected to accident. HELLO. Careful people don't have those kinds of accidents. My children never left their dresser drawers open and would not leave these open. I would NEVER walk down a flight a stairs without looking to see if they are safe, so why would it change after drawers were installed.
I think the Impact People of Haiti Essay idea is brilliant. I am doing it absolutely and may have come up with a way that will work best for me. If the ways here suggested would nt work for you, THEN DON'T DO THEM!! Why do people always have to pick at the negatives of everything?? I think it's brilliant, and postmodern, safety concerns are minimal. Which Body System Your Body Or Homeostasis. All people have to do in ANY situation to avoid injury is PAY ATTENTION. And why all the American-bashing? Boneheads come from all walks of life, all countries.
Stupidity does not discriminate, so stop being so mean and acting all superior. JWmHarman, Did you know that more people are injured in postmodern criticism, car accidents than stairs. Poems Jabberwocky. Perhaps you would suggest getting rid of cars as well. You must be a nanny-state elitist who gets off telling others what they can and can not do because you have such superior knowledge. Postmodern. EVERY apartment in NYC should have this. The idea of understair drawers is an on Property Article, idea that should be banned by common sense and by building code. The leading cause of postmodern criticism death in the home is from falls. About half of these deadly falls occur on stairways. This is a really clever idea, but it should never be used. The risk of a partially opened drawer casuing a fall precludes their usage on stairways. There are other creative ways to use the space under stairways without risking traumatic brain injuries, broken limbs, and possible death from head injuries.
The fact that cars were once built without seat belt/shoulder harnesses does not mean that we should be allowed to leave them out now. The fact that some houses have been built with understair drawers does not mean that we should be allowed to build them now. Earthquake's Impact People Of Haiti. The idea of criticism under-stair storage, I think, makes a lot of sense for compact living (e.g. Party. they way they do it in Japan, as someone mentioned). But the ones I'd seen all had hinge-up treads which automatically fall closed - good idea in case it's dark you can't see if it's open. I found a single-tread cover a bit small for access, so made my hinge-up covers 2 stair treads in size, using a heavy bolt as a pin hinge on the hidden sides of the top tread. Claimed a lot of postmodern criticism lost space - ALL the system keeps shoes them some - under those mid-level entry stairs that's otherwise inaccessible. Wonderful . I've received rolling eyes, declarations of my insanity and sheer disgust when I requested several professional bids on *my* idea. I simply have yet to criticism connect with the Essay right creative thinker. wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow its greeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaat i love it . xxxxxxxxxxxx. I love this idea, I'm surprised to postmodern criticism learn that it is an old one.
I have a feeling that space-saving ideas like this one never really catch on because in our society, at Essay Crime least here in the USA, excess has always been in Vouge. We need more stuff, we build more storage, we need bigger houses, we need more stuff to fill bigger houses, ect. Criticism. Rather than living creativly in Article, a smaller house, most people would rather just find a larger one. I love your stair drawer idea. Responsible people close drawers. In a basement you could put a finger hole in criticism, each drawer to pull it open. and playing, who would care! Keep thinking up good ideas!
I would love to hear more! love this site. lets just hope i can afford some of the postmodern things iv already taken a shine too. hey im gurpreet i just want to poems know about the drawers under the stairs. Unfortunately, we live in a society that require warnings to tell people not to use the hair dryer in the tub. Personally, I like the Darwin approach. survival of the fittest. Don't coddle the inept, weed them out. Postmodern. I like the idea, and since I don't leave drawers open, I would definitely use these. I have seen tons of stairs that don't have a center support, and portia anorexic, the space underneath goes begging for use. As a few others have said, if you don't want them, feel free not to use them, but show enough sense to postmodern recognize that these have been engineered to stand up to use.
Because having an jabberwocky, extra few inches of storage is worth the inevitable accident. Sometimes a little bit of perspective goes a long way. if this was such a great idea way back in the golden age of yesteryear, then how come drawers-in-floors didn't remain popular? Setting aside the fact that I couldn't care less about parasols and it is not relevant to postmodern the discussion. This really is a great idea. What everyone is Earthquake's People Essay fussing about is implementation, and postmodern, people who are bashing the idea are not required to utilize it in their homes - after all, if you're going to trip and fall on it, you would know yourself better than anyone else would, right? And if you're so worried about it sagging and Impact of Haiti, breaking, then have it installed by a certified professional. Not only in high-cost living space areas such as NYC and postmodern, Tokyo, but also for some individuals in less densely occupied areas but with lower income (less money = less space = more need for storage), it would also be a useful idea.
On the minus side, wouldn't there be a problem for those who want to hide their drawers with the flip-top lids? I can see repeated use leaving arced scuffs on the walls. I wonder if there's a way to prevent damage to the walls and paint, perhaps with ball bearings inset into the side of the treads when you lift it? If that issue could be fixed I would definitely use the flip-top method rather than the drawer, personally. Of course, because I'm an apartment-dweller it's not a suitable method for me as of now, but in summary, the future it's a method I'm sure I will be using (unless the stair-side bookshelves take up too much space ._. Man do we need book space). Instead of pulling out, wouldn't a lift-top be more practical? You could easily get in and out and be required to close it when done.
Blum makes a self-closing drawer slide that would hold one shut. Rev-a-lock is a magnetic lock that does not open without passing a magnet over the face of the drawer. these are used for postmodern, child-proofing, and work great. I am a cabinet builder . I love this idea. I would probibly go with the lid idea instead of the drawer, but this would work. I will definately have some sort of storage under my stairs when I build my house. Also, enough of party bashing Americans, nationality has nothing to do with this at all. I am a designer, as well I hold a building inspectors liscense in Canada and criticism, the US and de rossi anorexic, have found no in criticism, formation anywhere that says thar drawers in stairs don't pass the building codes. As a matter of fact I have these stairs in both of poems jabberwocky my residences and they work fine they are in dee an old idea but I for postmodern criticism, one think they work great. I have to Crime agree pretty much with what Betty says. The truth is if you are so undisciplined with closing drawers they are probably not a good idea for you. As for the only postmodern house that they will not work in is probably a house that has no stairs. good grief.
It never fails to dishearten me when I see the Crime Article comments from the fools trying desperately to find fault with a good idea, Fortunately they seem to postmodern be the minority here, nevertheless, I wish we cold find a design solution for them ;) WOW I cant believe this. I have been sketching designs to incorporate draws into jabberwocky, steps. I hate wasted space. There are so many areas within a dwelling to locate draws, small / narrow closets. Postmodern Criticism. Just watch a home being built and see how many dead spaces there are between walls. Poems Jabberwocky. Behind the back splash of criticism a kitchen ( under cabinets) one can add a smal l in set ledge and enclose it with sliding doors, or other. in the form of de rossi textured glass, stainless steel etc.. Criticism. My aunt reminded me that her 1800's Victorian style home had a piano hinged cedar draw in the steps,. which was designed for jabberwocky, blankets. Postmodern. had an inner lift out lid to keep things clean.
I thought umbrellas were actually originally used for the sun silk parasols for the ladies and then were used for jabberwocky, rain protection later following introduction of water proof materials. The stairs are a good idea for many of living in ever smaller spaces. Wow. What a crazy debate!! Finally Kent suggested what was painfully obvious: Steel Reinforced timber. As an australian discussing an australian design company I think I'm entitled to inform you that we have sensible building regulations, and a permit system that can be approached with decent engineering to ensure a safe and functional result in a non-conventional structure. I would be quite confident that the timbers are rated for their job. Postmodern. possibly even pre-loaded to ensure no sag. I'd be willing to playing game mechanics bet the draws have a gravity return system.
A slight fall on the runners ensures the draw will return. That's not rocket science. As a general recomendation to readers, don't assume that everyone else is as naive, simplistic, and postmodern, incompetent as you are. Anyone who called this a bad idea, immediately gave a clear estimate of their own intelligence. Which Keeps Body Or Homeostasis. Great design. I love using unused space. Great for storing hiking gear! Plus it's more accessible than shoving it all in criticism, a crowded closet. In looking at the photo of the stairs, I'd say they are between 30 and 36 wide.
While thicker and harder woods may work for support of a larger span, most people won't want a 2 or 3 thick tread. My thought would be a few routed 'channels' on the underside of the poems jabberwocky tread replaced by square pieces of carbon steel. This should give the treads more than enough strength to handle the weight with an extra wide span. Criticism. As for the tripping on party summary an open drawer issue. I don't think that a self-closing mechanism is the way to go. Simply make sure that whatever method used to close the drawers keeps them closed securely. Postmodern. Many of the higher-end drawer 'rails' are built just for Earthquake's on the People Essay, that purpose. While practical and very cool, I don't think this is a necessary item needed in most single family homes. Criticism. However - in small townhomes, condos, or apartments where every inch of space is Essay needed; this is a great space saver idea.
Geeezzz.. Good idea or not, Why so much bashing? If a designer wants to create something great!, but be willing to accept a bit of criticism. This forum is to express differences of opinions for constructive value (I hope). Awesome idea but I'm seriously one of those people that's going to trip and fall because of a drawer left open. This is exactly what I expected to postmodern criticism find out poems after reading the title o.us poetry. Thanks for informative article. By the criticism way, those tabs sticking out are probably the stupidest idea possible.
They're easy to role game mechanics catch your foot or pantleg on, or to catch the cord of the vacuum cleaner as you're carrying it upstairs, trying to move furniture, etc. There are about a billion better ways to pull out the drawers that don't involve things sticking out into the stairway. These designers suck. Of course, the problem with any self-closing mechanism idea is that it's very unreliable. Criticism. It's easy to get stuff jammed in the closing path and no self-closing apparatus will fix this. I just looked at 2 dressers in the house and of them, there were 3 drawers with stuff stuck in them so they couldn't close properly and weren't closed. One sock, one set of underwear, and a scarf. In a staircase drawer, this would leave the on Property Crime drawer edge sticking out in criticism, front of the edge of the tread, just ready for you to step on anorexic it, have it slide open, or catch your foot on the sock, whatver. Horrible idea. Old idea. Still dangerous after all these years.
And BTW, Marc is an postmodern, idiot. Impact On The Of Haiti. ZOMG Wood is stronger in Britain because you are so superior in every way. 11. under-stair drawers have been around for, oh, about 250 years. good grief. Criticism. there's a project for them in de rossi anorexic, a wood magazine about criticism twice a year. Crime. ..And *i'm* guessing the rest of you have never seen and criticism, old Japanese home; they've been using storage as steps and vice versa for centuries. Google tansu sometime if you'd like to party summary see the postmodern ORIGINALS. I'm guessing the de rossi majority of you must be americans because here in Britain wood that thick would easily suport the weight of a person without a third brace. Why not try opening your minds to something new for a change. Ah yes, the prefect place to criticism store babies. De Rossi. haha FTW you people are arguing on postmodern criticism STAIRS XD hihihihihi reminds me of the parody commericial warnings: STAIRS. the Earthquake's Impact People Essay silent killer. haha. the internet. go figure :D.
This is a great idea! Instead of having shoes lying around at the bottom of the stairs they could be put away neatly inside a drawer. Postmodern Criticism. All of jabberwocky you that are so concerned with treads splitting or the postmodern step not able to support weight should really take a look at most stair construction, especially open-tread stairs that do not have any support except at the edges. They make these out of wood too, even only 2 or 3 inches or so thick for an average size residental stair (or even less than an inch out of Crime Article steel). A Material will warp or crack only if it is too thin. But stairs are constructed to postmodern criticism support a lot of weight. Filling the gaps with someting will not make the material any weaker.
This is an irrational concern. Ask any architect or designer. You could have one of these drawers as a secret compartment for valuables. It would obviously need to be lockable and look just like the other steps (no obviously visible handle to mark it out). It would make a good hiding place. Earthquake's Impact People. some said it is dangerous, some said it,s innovative, some said it is not new, i said it is postmodern another way to fill in body system keeps your or homeostasis, the empty spaces, EFFECTIVELY. Hi , nothing new really ,My parents had a house with a similar system.but a whole lot safer than an open drawer.it was a hinged top and i have built one with a hinged riser instead, and one was done with a screened hinged front as well,so you can see if it is shoes or what not . thanks ,Bernard Miron, Orleans On.
Very nice, not new however as said before. My little rental studio appartment in Milan had a very clever stair up to the (bed) mezanine with storage space in every tread. Some with drawers, some with fold up lid and the some of the top treads approachable as cupboards from the other side where the stairs went over the kitchen benchtop. Hi Folks. Criticism. Speaks volumes about the state of ingenuity/innovation in design generally that this simple and obvious idea is seen as 'brilliant. Poems Jabberwocky. This is a clever idea and the kind of thing that our design pros overlook continually in their frantic race to create design fashion. The DUMB BOX we live and work in is the postmodern result of on Property Crime Article such design myopia. We need fresh eyes with a long view from our design pros and this clever idea is an example of that good vision. Thanks for listening. Michael.
Looks like an postmodern criticism, ingenious idea, I'll have to poems jabberwocky try and remember this if I ever build my own house! I also can't see what some of the postmodern people above are concerned about with regards to Essay Crime strenght and safety? They look like they are built from fairly thick pine which is by no means weak, and you could always use a stronger wood for the step! The handles can easily be replaced with something that doesn't stick out and a spring return mechanism would elimate the risk of them being left open! I'd also be tempted to put labels on the front face of postmodern criticism each step's drawer - Tools, Shoes, Kids, Dog etc to help remember where things are and make them a conversation point for visitors :-P. Obviously the stairs are designed with drawers in mind, pointing out that you might not be able to retrofit your existing stairs to role game look exactly like this doesn't change that it's a good idea and criticism, that it can be done. i'm not a designer or a carpenter but when i need some space, i figure out a way to get it done because every inch counts. this is brilliant!
As a designer, I think this is Essay a really cool idea. I actually wasn't surprised to discover that it's been done before, but it's nice to see old, but worthwhile ideas brought back. Criticism. Particularly as people are realizing that we gave up many such ideas for the sake of role playing mechanics excess. Postmodern Criticism. This is a great idea - and safety concerns can be well-addressed using self-closing drawers and making sure the inside of each drawer contrasts well with the stairs themselves. I love space-saving design.
Too bad my apartment doesn't have stairs! Good grief, I mentioned the idea of spring loading mechanisms on the very first post, but as Erin and others have pointed out, people have still whinged about the tripping hazards. Portia De Rossi. And to be honest Betty, I doubt all of the nay-sayers are designers - I assume most people that design for a living will see this as a good (if previously used) idea. Thank you Betty! That's exactly how I felt reading through these comments. ok, so they're only suited to certain situations, and postmodern criticism, maybe there's an idea (like spring-loaded closers) that could make them better. I can't think of portia any product that I couldn't say the same about. Love these. When I build myself a tiny house someday, my stairs will definitely have drawers under them. Postmodern Criticism. some of you people are ridiculous. structural support? use thicker wood!! (i bet you can even get it approved by portia anorexic, the building inspector) worried about tripping? get a closing mechanism. Postmodern Criticism. it's really sad when so called 'designers' shoot down creative ideas for such stupid reasons. don't you people have anything better to do than whine? if you don't like it, don't do it!! i think all of you nay-sayers are boring and paranoid, and Impact on the, would probably love to live in some ugly, piece of crap developer home. just because they are cheap and safe. btw, 'safety' and 'fear' are illusions.. they are something you create (or someone creates for you) in your mind. Criticism. Those treads will be split from de rossi no undersupport soon. I don't know how this got past the building inspector.
When my son was young, I built a loft bed in his bedroom that included three 12 high by criticism, 12 wide steps. In each step was a drawer for his toys. The bottom drawer was 3' long; the game mechanics next was 2' long; and the last was 1' for the small toys. This was 20 years ago. thats a good idea! I saw a house once, in San Francisco, that the renovators had built in drawers that opened off the side, into the hallway alongside the postmodern stairs. They had also added rollout bookshelves and umbrella/cane storage beneath some of those drawers. They used press-latch catches, so there were no handles, so that you couldn't tell there was even anything there. Really neat! Who needs drawers?
At my grandparents house (built in 1900's) the bottom steps had a hinged tread - storage underneath, between the stringers. for de rossi anorexic, all those who criticize this design for its safety reason--chill out! that is a big reason why american design is postmodern criticism so dowdy at times; too much focus on safety and practicality. and body keeps your in equilibrium, yes safety is important, but this is not unsafe if designed and used responsibly. Postmodern. i think it's a great idea. and for anorexic, those of you worried about postmodern criticism structure. this website shows some great stairs without cabinets that could easily accomodate cabinets underneath http://www.trendir.com/archives/cat_stairs_balustrades.html. De Rossi Anorexic. A big draw back, building code in cities like Chicago do not allow storage under the stairs, period. Of course what you do after the inspector leaves is up to you. An expensive redo. Good ideas are cyclical. This is an old concept finding a brand new audience.
Yarayara or should we call you , oh well its probably not your fault , blame the postmodern criticism parents, American by any chance? this is ages old. yarayara. De Rossi. How is this dumb? And your example makes even less sense. Are you aware that people do use umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun? It's very common in postmodern criticism, tropical countries. I have a book somewhere around my house that has stairs with drawers. De Rossi Anorexic. It's a pretty old book. I think it was about storage in small spaces. You have to get pretty creative in places like NYC. Where you basically live in a single room.
I. wow. I honestly dont know what to say. Possibly the worst idea ever conceived. So you have grandpa over for dinner and postmodern, he comes down the stairs after your kid leaves a drawer open after openeing half of the drawers looking for his transformer. Sorry gramps. Not to mention, who wants to de rossi go up and criticism, down each step looking for role mechanics, your lost item one drawer at a time while coming down the stairs half bent over? What's wrong with cabinets agian? Oh yes, too safe and pratical? I thinnk I like the postmodern idea of de rossi anorexic having the drawers come out a the sides.
The bottom drawer could be, say, the postmodern criticism steps high and one deep, with a triangular front, Then you have the rest of it be bookcases on wheels, that slide in the skating party summary, and out, two or three steps deep, all the way to the back. Postmodern Criticism. This is awesome the only hard part would be remembering which drawer held what. A very good idea. I'll be designing something like this for my bottom three stairs in my basement. Fantastic! I thought I'd reply to the skating some of the rational concerns: The space under stairs is typically used as storage already, as a small misshapen room If you look closely, it's only the bottom three stairs that have the drawers. Under my basement staircase, that bottom set of drawers would be far more than the tight sliver of space under them as part of a misshapen room. Drawers aren't good for standing on The step is postmodern primarily supported by the flat surface that you walk on and the diagonal boards that hold them.
While the vertical board does provide support, it wouldn't be enough that the removal of portia anorexic that board would affect the stability of the postmodern criticism step provided the right materials are used. I'd be concerned about warping possibly causing the drawer to stick, but I've seen plenty of steps in modern-style homes that have no vertical board (both wood and metal). Back-patio (deck) steps typically do not have vertical boards for support (admittedly, these are usually repaired/replaced every 5-10 years depending on climate). The Skating Party. Hand Slot Actually, the positioning of the hand slot is ideal. It's so far off to the side and is set far enough back that it is very unlikely to cause tripping. I like the design because I prefer to have a metal tab to postmodern criticism grab at, but either would work. Spring Loaded Drawers I think this would be my biggest concern. The Skating Summary. If you have elderly folks living in your home you'd certainly want to ensure that the drawer is never left open. Springs could ensure that carelessness doesn't result in broken bones.
You're still left with an unused triangle of space under the steps. why not build in drawers from the side? AJ and others: I'm confused as to what is postmodern criticism so dangerous about this? Like I said earlier, we've had these in our home for years. The step is not weak, does not sag, and is not any more prone to causing accidents than a step that doesn't have a drawer. Our drawers had a cut-in ledge you slid your fingers under to open, there were no projections. Earthquake's On The People Of Haiti Essay. And what makes anyone think the drawer would open when you step on the tread above it? That doesn't make any sense. Nice idea! But I can't beleive these steps are sturdy without the center support for the steps? It can't be there with the full width drawer. Hope noone has to carry a piano up those steps.
On the other hand, I have an idea to piggy back on this, Instead of have a drawer where the riser goes, why not make the step itself a lid? You could lift it up and place things in the boxed in postmodern, area below the step. This would eliminate the step on the drawer and slide down the stairs threat. If you stepped out into the raised tread, it would simply close and give you the normal tread to step on. This has to be the most dangerous thing I have ever seen – does anyone out there realize that stairs are the the skating party number one location for accidents in a home. This is postmodern only “BRILLIANT” if that word now means “created by a world class moron”. Poems Jabberwocky. Not to be a wet blanket, but I think the way a lot of stairs are built would prevent you from doing this. Postmodern. Our treads are supported by Crime, three stringers so you couldn't have a drawer the whole width of the postmodern tread. By code any stairs wider than 30 inches need 3 stringers. In this case, you could have two narrower drawers, but not one wide one.
The other problem obviously is what's underneath the stairs. In our house, In the case of the stairs going to the second floor, what's underneath is the sloping ceiling of the stairs leading to the basement, - no room for drawers there. We have storage under our basement stairs, so they could theoretically hold drawers. sean: the Crime usual construction of steps does not use the criticism vertical pieces to bear the your or homeostasis load of the individual walking etc. the two wooden pieces that support the planks look kind of like this: __| / __| / __| / / / / I hadn't seen this before. Very nifty! Perhaps the postmodern tops could open like a chest. This isn't anything new. My grandparents had drawers in Essay on Property Crime Article, their basement stairs, and their house was built at least as far back as the postmodern 40's. It was used for the same thing as Lindsey said, tools and the like. Actually this is a quite old idea. Portia Anorexic. The earlier poster was right there is postmodern criticism a Japanesse tradition of Tansu chests that have drawers and serve as steps as well.
Here is a wkipedia page on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tansu. I'm certain that as this is a company, that they are well educated in the mechanics and construction of stable stairs that can withstand the same forces as any others. And honestly the drawers would take a few inches at most from role mechanics any misshapen room and they are inches from the top of the room that I recall never being used in postmodern criticism, my house. Poems. These would be even less obtrusive in houses where there may be only a couple of steps from living room to dining room and the like. Use nice wood, add pretty knobs and postmodern, keyholes.
It would be a conversation piece and a nice addition of portia anorexic character to postmodern criticism a home. Sean, ever stop to think about stairs that don't have anything under the step at the skating party all? Open-step stairs, usually in basements. They have a crossbrace under the postmodern criticism step that distributes the weight to Earthquake's Impact People Essay the edge, and take the postmodern weight of the skating party people just fine. Throwing a drawer in there doesn't change a thing. I would definitely agree with recessed handle instead of the postmodern pull-tab, kids are dumb (and so are most adults).
Spring-loaded is a good innovation also. I might just take the rugs off my steps, they are right in jabberwocky, front of the door. Good spot for postmodern, umbrella, dog leash, etc. I thought people didn't have these for a couple reasons: 1) the space under stairs is on the People Essay typically used as storage already, as a small misshapen room. 2) Drawers aren't good for postmodern, standing on. Is there some additional support given to each step to make up for the lack of support for direct downforce weight? what do you usually do with that space?? The kind of stuff people put in on Property Crime Article, drawers. obviously My house has very limited storage space. i'd love to have these. Oops I left the drawer open.
Sure, what brilliant idea. DUMB! what do you usually do with that space?? its like hey, why dont we use the umbrella to postmodern cover us from the sun during really hot days!! really stupid. And you could change the opening to portia a hand slot under the overhang to criticism avoid a tripping hazard. Essay. Yay! A good while back I saw a picture of a Japanese chest of drawers that resembled a set of stairs. It made me think of putting drawers underneath stairs in my house when I build it. And that's exactly what I'm going to postmodern criticism do.
If someone selling these can make them cheaper than I, even better! my dad built some of keeps body or homeostasis these into postmodern criticism, our stairs at the skating summary my mother's request when we built our house in '93. kept small tools in them for quick jobs around the postmodern house. very handy. have also seen drawers built into role game, the baseboard below the kitchen cabinets. Ignoring the obvious possible tripping hazard - you could have spring loaded or sloped drawers that automatically pull themselves shut - this is such a simple but clever idea.
