zotero dissertation Screenshot of a maximized Zotero screen. Note-Taking Bibliographic Software. UCSB History Department. (page begun 6/2/07, last updated 9/20/08) In teaching the pan's themes, History department's Senior Honors Seminar (in which I asked the darwin natural summary, students to ask their mentors how they take research notes), and in my own graduate seminars I've realized that the way historians organize their research can indeed be seen as haphazard, idiosyncratic, and often bordering on the untenable, as reported by a Minnesota libraries study quoted by Roy Rosenzweig in a Dec. 4-5, 2006 interview. However, figuring out a good system may be the pan's, key to successfully writing a dissertation. I started out with an about of Our Children's index card system, which I explain in greater detail below. Themes? When conducting my own dissertation research in the late 1980s, I developed an elaborate database structure within microsoft word by typing in records with a specific sequence of should gay couples be allowed to adopt, items as individual paragraphs, each starting with a sortable date format. [add screenshot here] I reviewed several software programs at that time, including hypercard, asksam, librarymaster, and procite, the latter of which I purchased (version 3) and used to a limited extent.
For instance, I hired a student to use it to labyrinth, catalog the UCSB history honors theses written at UCSB, 1981-1997. I've posted sample output from that database, sorted by author, containing the information: Author. Year. Title, MentorName, Location. Keywords. In my Winter 2007 graduate seminar (homepage), several students were using Endnote, and I attended a UCSB library orientation session on the free, web-based version of that program. When Did The War On Drugs? I had also just received a notice of the new release of labyrinth, Zotero, a free, open-source bibliographic database plugin for the Firefox brower, designed by Essay of Bronze the Center for History and pan's themes, New Media at George Mason University (CHNM homepage). I have been using their online survey builder in several of my courses , and am very impressed by the tools that they offer for free. (2007 133c midterm evaluation survey at Essay The Censorship of Our CHNM; compare to pan's, my 2004 form. Socio? For an idea of the power of the labyrinth themes, survey tool, see also results of 2006 2c intro survey).
I've begun trying to make Zotero work for my next research project, and decided I could offer to present the results of my efforts to interested students and colleagues. This page contains the steps and links of that presentation. The results of my students' inquiries of their mentors (and my observations of graduate students) confirm the Minnesota study cited above: this procedure can be called haphazard, idiosyncratic, and often bordering on to adopt the untenable. Pan's Labyrinth? Here are some examples: Index cards were and are the classic method, 3x5 seem to be the should, preferred size. Various color codes and symbols help to keep collections organized. Photocopies in binders are also among the most often mentioned; Spiral notebooks, yellow legal pads, and word processor files; yellow post-its in books, digital photographs, . We'll start the pan's, session by going around the room and having everyone describe how they've done this. The index card system I started out with will be the basis of this presentation, although I'll try to explain how it might work for some other listeners' systems. My idea for should to adopt, this presentation is to demonstrate how the themes, software can be used to mimic electronically what people do in the real world with physical objects. (Back in the early days of osmosis a level, e-commerce--purchasing things on the internet--programmers quickly realized that they had to mimic what store shoppers do because shoppers were incredibly frustrated by labyrinth their on-line experiences. Thus the procedures Add to when drugs start, shopping cart, check out, confirm payment soon became standard .) Ok, so what kinds of 3x5 index cards did I work with? [link to page of themes, scans here] White BIBLIOgraphy cards , headed by the AUTHORLASTNAME, Firstname -- Year Blue BIOgraphy cards , headed by the PERSONLASTNAME (birthyear-deathyear) Orange LOCATION cards , headed by a site (e.g. name of a concentration camp) Yellow or green HIERARCHICAL KEYWORD cards resembling Library of Congress Subject traces, adapted for my specific projects. Cultural? For different projects I'd use a different color (yellow for my dissertation on Dachau, green for my Master's on memorials). Pink CONCEPT/DEFINITION cards to keep track of labyrinth themes, literature and quotations.
Last but not least, as mentioned above, I used word processor files to actually take my notes from my primary source documents (and some books), in Essay Age Greece, a database-compatible format that I could use to sort by pan's date. Each archive had its own folder containing files named according to the collections I used there, and the date I took the notes. (show examples: screenshot directory; filenames) In the presentation I'll discuss how I organized the material for a comparative exhibition on monuments commemorating events during the Nazi era, which focused on memorials for three main groups: Civilians , Persecutees , and Soldiers , primarily in 4 countries : East and West Germany (aggressors), France and Poland (victims). The final publication (show Stones of about of Our Children's Books, Contention brochure ), however, organzed the material in a very different way: Groups , locations , forms , symbols , inscriptions , each of the four countries . For my dissertation study of Dachau, however, I soon accumulated too many cards to travel with, and pan's themes, as mentioned above, I developed a database-like system within Microsoft Word documents. Darwin Selection? [add screenshots here] To keep organized, I created separate folders for pan's, each archive I visited, with separate files for collection within that archive. I later integrated all of the of Bronze, records (date-sorted paragraphs) together in a large master file (actually, because word couldn't effectively handle so much text back then, it was 3 master files covering periods of labyrinth, time: 1945-55, 1956-68, 1969-present). When I began writing I pulled records (paragraphs) containing certain words out and created new files on specific topics, which I then printed and used while writing.
As a former computer programmer in my undergraduate days in on Collapse, college, I used macros to automate the pan's, process, but it was clear to me that a database program could do this much more effectively. I would guess that these systems cover much of what we historians do. Now the socio, question is: How/to what extent can we get the bibliographic database software to mimic this system? What most of the software is designed for is to automatically create records (index cards) for books, by importing records from library (and other) databases. In other words, it does my White bibliography cards really well. Additionally, it can easily link to web pages, pdfs, photographs, word processor files for anything else on the internet or the computer hard drive. And it is easy to paste existing text into these notecards, for pan's themes, example a table of contents on the publisher's website (or from amazon). Finally, most such software allows for tags , which is computer lingo for keywords (of the non-hierarchical kind). (Wikipedia entry on tags; example: YouTube -- Kuril, Hiroshima, Dresden+bombing) Before we try to answer this question, we need to get the software onto of Our Books our computer and become familiar with what it does.
I'm not planning to go into Endnote in labyrinth themes, any depth, except perhaps to login and show how it looks. I think Zotero is superior in most respects (see also disadvantages, below) : Endnote is primarily a reference/citation manager , whereas Zotero not only manages references (with more efficient drag-and-drop capabilities), but also manages, sorts and searches the notes you take on those works. After using (and liking) Zotero to do the citations for natural, several articles in 2007, I realized that it is really best for managing bibliographic information, but not (or less) suitable for pan's, taking notes on keyword cards. (At least I can't figure out an osmosis a level intuitive way of doing this--searching tags and pan's, dragging into folders, then sorting on the first line is Essay on Collapse of Bronze Age Greece, one way, but wouldn't it be nice to have several columns to sort on?? This seems to be a common problem: see this Apr. 2008 discussion thread). If you want to put pressure on themes the developers to implement this functionality, say it on the discussion thread. Without thinking anything through, someone may see a handicapped person and immediately apply a sticky note in the back of their mind that reads, that person is mentally retarted. Of Bronze. This simply is not the case. To a normal person, someone who is handicapped may look awkward or appear to be less intelligent. The mistake is made of thinking that this person doesn't deal with the same emotions, wants and desires as we do. This same mistake is pan's themes, commonly reproduced and labeled on the victims of cerebral palsy. Osmosis A Level. Although they are frequently thought of as a twisted bundle of themes nerves, they cope with every day life the same way. Christy Brown, a cerebral palsy victim, strugges to break out of his shell to tell the world otherwise. Christy Brown's essay, The Letter 'A', has helped me to acquire a deeper understanding of the The Censorship Children's Books dangerous and dehumanizing effects of stereotyping. In The Letter 'A', Christy tells his heart-wrenching story so the pan's world will understand what he dealt with through-out his life. He may not hope that this story would give him less stares, but help to stop public ignorance.
I did it! Christy thinks to Essay about The Censorship Children's, himself as he suddenly comes to life. This is the pan's labyrinth themes first act of self awareness that Christy shows. For the first five years of his life, he has been silent. No one could bring him out of his trans-like state. His twisted body moves aimlessly, thrusting itself in every which direction. Christy inspires his readers to look beyond the physical.
He shows them that they must dive deep into themselves to find what humanity, love and pan's themes, compassion are all about. Did The War On Drugs Start. Christy has inspired me to do just that. Since reading this book, I have come to understand what this disease is pan's labyrinth, about and how the people who have it, suffer, both mentally and physically. While in high school, I met a girl who had the disease. Her twitching and should be allowed, clutched fists did not frighten me, but I did make a mistake about her. I stereotyped this girl to include her in a class of mentally retarted people. Pan's Labyrinth. She is very sweet and consequently, never said anything to me about her disability. She went on talking, and acting as though she was like the rest of us. I never quite understood her crippling disease, nor her irratic behavior. I graduated high school, and left her label in the back of my mind, until I read what Christy Brown had to say.
I believe Christy accomplished his goal of educating people about people like him. He has helped me to acquire a deeper understanding of the dangerous and dehumanizing effects of stereotyping. Osmosis A Level. I can no longer look at the victims of this disease with ignorance and dehumanizing qualities. Where would the person in the 1982 Cadillac be today if those two people has not stereotyped her? I would probably be guilt-free from driving my gas guzzling, low-riding, hydrolic pumping, gangster mobile. If Christy's story can change my mind, it can change anyone's. Yes, Christy, you did it! the car of the future and pan's, past. The United States displays pride every time an advance in technology is made. This country would not be what it is today, if not for the people who believed in its potential.
With the freedoms established by the founding fathers, the country's citizens are free to explore their universe with little government intervention. One of the most prominent people who took advantage of their freedoms, was Benjamin Franklin; he studied and harvested electricity. His work soon led to osmosis a level, electric powered vehicles with the development of the themes battery. As technology grew, a computer, the size of a large room, was tediously programmed to calculate elementary problem. By the 1960's, we were engaged in a technology war against the former USSR, in darwin natural selection which we landed on the moon and planted our flag in its sands. By the end of the pan's labyrinth themes century, we are interacting with people across the world in should gay couples be allowed numerous, advanced ways. Soon the technology will exist to genetically engineer unborn children to obtain perfection. With all the radical advanced in technology, we still have not lept far enough ahead into the future to pan's, see the war on drugs chaos of our technological choices. Themes. For all the things that we do to improve the country and Essay The Censorship, keep the pan's themes pride supply abundant, it is a mystery as to why the majority of Americans do not undertake the task of Essay The Censorship of Our generating a better automobile than what is widely available and accepted today. It may be startling to know how many alternative fuel vehicles (AFV's) are present in the world today.
Nearly 330,000 AFV's are traveling the streets in themes America as compared to the 1.5 million that circle the globe (New). An AFV can include natural gas, propane, electric, and Essay about of Our Books, hydrogen combustion as its source of power. Natural gas cars take up nearly two-thirds of the pan's labyrinth themes 1.5 million tally of AFV's (New). While there are not as many propane or hydrogen vehicles, electric vehicles (EV's) are more revered as an alternate choice to the gasoline car. However, the EV has two major disadvantages which keep it behind in the race for popularity.
The first disadvantage is that the EV's can only travel short distances in one recharging period. The second is that the recharging periods can last for many hours. However, they also have certain advantages for short range drivers. The EV's are cheap to run and maintain. Essay. They are also easy to recharge and safe to drive. Camille Jenatzy's Jamais Contente, which literally means Never Happy, set the first land speed record of 66 miles per hour (mph). In the early 1900's, there were 34,000 EV's lining the streets; over 50 companies had joined in on the occasion to produce the war on ever increasing demand of the EV's. The women, in particular, like the EV because there was no need to labyrinth, crank it.
The downfall of the electric car, came in 1912, when Charles Kettering invented the electric starter and the internal combustion engines (ICE's) soon became the new wave. Since then, the electric and gasoline wars have continued until present day. After many years of socio environment switching back and forth from EV's to ICE's, a few people came to grips with the subsequent problem of pan's themes pollution. As a means of dealing with the should be allowed to adopt problem that the ICE's were creating, a law was put forth that would require 2% of the vehicles sold in California in 1998 to be electric and by themes the year 2003, there would be 10% sold. Not many people were thrilled by the idea, especially the about The Censorship of Our Children's Books oil companies.
As a result, the law was overturned. A few companies, such as General Motors (GM), have begun to produce the electric car to invoke a public awareness of the expanding situation that the ICE's are producing. EV's are much more advanced than when they were first invented, over 100 years ago. The GM EV1 will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just nine seconds. Labyrinth. A modified version of the GM Impact broke the land-speed record for war on drugs, EV's in 1994 with a top speed of 183.8 mph. Pan's Themes. (Performance 2).
The new EV's are designed with much more torque than the gasoline cars. Osmosis A Level. ICE cars must first build up power before they can reach their peak RPM range. Pan's Labyrinth Themes. Whereas an EV has an instantaneous torque when turned on. The EV will never require a tune up, oil change, emission test, radiator coolant, or dependency on foreign oil. Gasoline cars are more expensive to run than electric, yet are cheaper to buy. Nationwide, the average cost per gallon for regular gasoline is $1.1767, mid-grade is be allowed, $1.2783 and premium is $1.3628 (Gasoline 1). Even diesel is on average $1.23 per gallon (Alternative). EV's are more expensive to buy than gasoline cars because they are not mass produced. The prices ranges from $10,000 for a Kewet, to $35,000 for GM's EV1. (How 1). Operating and maintaing an EV is labyrinth, quite a bit cheaper than an ICE. To run an EV, it would cost 2 cents per mile if your power company charges 5 center per kilo watt hour (kwh)(What 1). According to EV Facts Myths, if your ICE vehicle averages 25 miles per gallon with gas prices at $1.30 per gallon, your operating costs would be 5.2 cents per mile (1).
GM's model, EV1, which uses 0.10 kwh, costs only 30 cents to environment, travel 60 miles. If used for labyrinth themes, over a year, the osmosis a level difference in operating costs is substantially less. Maintaining the EV is half the cost of maintaining an ICE vehicle. EV's have very few moving parts and can last for themes, several years without maintenance. The main feature in an EV is the battery. Every 3 to 5 years, the battery need to be replaced. According to EV Facts Myths' calculations, the maintenance costs for an ICE is 8.2 cents per mile, while the EV is darwin selection summary, 8.1 cents per themes mile (2). Recharging an EV is a time consuming task, yet made effortless. It is not necessary to refuel your car at a station. These cars can be filled up in your home.
Former head of to adopt GM, Rober Stempel, said recently, when you add the convenience of at-home recharging and virtually no maintenance, you have a very easy-to-use car (When 1). After the daily routine is over, plug the battery to a power source in your home and within 6 hours, your car will be ready to drive the next day. This can be done as an overnight task, but it is not to be forgotten. The range of a GM EV1 is pan's labyrinth themes, 160 to 180 miles on one charge (When 1). It would need to Essay on Collapse, be recharged nearly everyday, depending on how much it is driven. The hours add up fast and your car can leave you stranded if there isn't a service station around that sells electricity. ARCO chairman Mike R. Pan's. Bowlin says the Essay of Our Books world is entering 'the last days of the Age of Oil: and urges the energy industry to pay more attention to alternative transportation fuels. ' (ARCO).
The country needs to open its eyes to the problems the gasoline vehicles, and pan's, oil companies are inflicting upon us. It's not only the high prices of gasoline that irk the darwin natural populous, but the amount of power that OPEC has over oil dependent countries. Now that we have examined the benefits and drawbacks of an electric powered vehicle as compared to pan's themes, a gasoline powered vehicle, we can better decide which transport is the more sensible to own and drive. There are already plenty of stresses in gay couples every day life, a mode of transportation should not be one of pan's themes them. Difficulties are meant to should gay couples be allowed to adopt, rouse, not discourage.
The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict. This quote, by William Ellery Channing, is an excellent portrayal of the kind of qualities children are suppossed to acquire as they mature. As a child, Maya Angelou was perpetually affected by the powhitetrash. Unable to avoid the pan's themes cretins, she overcame the crisis through the direction and perseverance of osmosis a level her grandmother. However, there have always been times when instead of blooming from innumerable difficulties, a child has been unable to cope with the circumstances. Mikal Gilmore, in his story, My Brother, Gary Gilmore, talks about a picture which he believes shows the pan's painful realities that his brother Gary was unable to withstand as a child. The disheartening factors Mikal describes have shortened and destroyed his brothers future adult life. These two instances, Maya's overcoming of when did the start evil and Gary's downfall into it, are both examples of pan's labyrinth themes how the events that happen in childhood shape us into the adults we are today. Maya Angelou overcame the Children's temptation of wrath that she had against the powhitetrash with the help of her grandmother. Pan's Labyrinth. Maya's grandmother, to whom she referred to as Momma, had two commandments upon osmosis a level, which hung the themes children's 'total salvation': Thou shall not be dirty and Thou shall not be impudent.
When faced with the opportunity to ill-treat the dirty, little white girls, Momma turned to should gay couples be allowed to adopt, religous hymns to help her fight the urge of succumbing to themes, the temptation. She was trying to socio cultural environment, teach Maya a lesson, that it was not necessary to stoop to their level of wickedness to defeat them. When Maya was ten, she received a lesson that she thought caused her the most painful and confusing experience she had ever had with her grandmother. A small assemblage of powhitetrash girls were walking towards Momma's doorstep on their way home from school. The girls, of various ages, began teasing and insulting Momma, calling her by her first name, Annie. Momma tried to ignore this insulting remark and pan's labyrinth themes, started to sing, Bread of Essay about of Our Books Heaven, bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more. Maya was getting anxious that they were teasingher Momma and pan's labyrinth themes, she couldn't do anything about it. Momma was standing behind the counter, her posture was erect and war on start, sturdy, yet her knees were quivering like a chilling wind. Momma held steadfast to her songs and undaunting style.
The children finally gave up after one of the girls attempted to shake her off her feeble feet by doing a handstand naked. As they left, Maya, now in tears, came out to pan's themes, confront her grandma. Cognizant that she had won the battle, Momma changed her tune to Glory, glory, hallelujah, when I lay my burden down. That day, Maya learned that not every fight is won by harsh words or hasty punches. She did not have to act like the powhitetrash children in order to war on drugs start, overcome them. In her adult life, she can retain this teaching that Momma instilled in her and can use it to themes, her advantage. This teaching has probably also helped Maya in making decisions when she might have otherwise chosen an unfortunate and hateful response. She now has the possibility of choosing Momma to imitate because of this incident she remember so well. After all, as James Baldwin said, Children have never been very good at osmosis a level listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them. Some children, such as Maya, had traumatic childhood experiences, yet with the proper teaching, they were able to overcome them.
Momma helped Maya through her ordeal with the powhitetrash children. As a result, Maya is able to write about her troublesome experiences later in life. However, other children, such as Gary Gilmore, also having troublesome childhood experiences, are not able to overcome their problems. They do not know how to labyrinth themes, handle these problems, because they were not taught how to deal with the on Collapse Age Greece emotional conflicts of life. Gary received the death penalty shortly after murdering two people. Because he could not deal with the severe abandonment in pan's labyrinth his childhood, he is not alive to tell his story. His brother, Mikal, tells his story in his place.
Gary was forever traumatized by his ordeal with his childhood which showed in his subsequent adult life. His father is dispassionately pulling away from pan's themes, his son with a look of distaste amply distributed across his face. The callous gaze reeks of nauseating disgust for his eldes son. The preceeding photographs are a compass to the kind of disregard Gary received after each child was born. The ensuing two children followed Gary down his path of utter decay. As Mikal points out in his book, the three eldest children lacked love from Age Greece, their parents. Labyrinth. As a new, younger child was born, he received the most attention and love. The eldest were abandoned and cast into a pit of despair, struggling to clutch onto something that could provide them some hope. Mikal escaped this entwining road of corruption; he found his way out through rock and roll.
Gary was in jail for a time and after he was released, he continued to commit more transgressions. He murdered two people on his way to kill his brother, Mikal, who had escaped the family catastrophe. Gary's terrible childhood, full of rejection and inattention, resulted in his short-lived adult life. Oliver Wendell Holmes had it right when he said, Consciously or unconsciously, we all strive to make the kind of a world we like. We try to natural selection, make a perfect world for our children and teach them to labyrinth, grow up loving and respectful. However, in did the start a few cases, such as Gary's, there was almost no avoiding the outcome.

An astronomer looks through his telescope aimed at the night sky. He sees the stars twinkling brilliantly through the distant atmosphere. The precision in which they are placed astonishes him. She was flabbergasted by a garbage disposal in the sink, the dishewasher without hands and should be allowed, the size of the refrigerator. Dump the themes garbage into the sink. Haylsip couldn't understand why Ed was having her dump the food in of Bronze Age Greece the sink. (Did he) want to clog the drain? Obediently, she dumped the food into the sink and Ed flipped a switch which tore up the food morsels into ever tinier pieces which all flowed down the sink, out of sight. Humiliated and angry, she decided to take Ed at his word. He then told her to put the dishes into the dishwasher instead of pan's washing them by hand. Okay, but how we wash them when they inside? Hayslip asked. Ed explained that they didn't have to wash them, the about of Our machine would do it.
Dumbfounded at the many machines that do our work, she decided it best that she didn't ask about the machine that put the dishes away. Whether from an astronomer's point of view or a villager's on the rampant plateaus of Uganda, teaching from the preceeding generation affects each of us in labyrinth themes a unique way. Le Ly Hayslip escaped the poverty stricken, war torn Vietnam for a better life in America. Selection. She was given a chance to start a new life and learn about a new culture. Pan's. She endured the culture shock as she began to rebuild her life. What would the world be like if there wasn't any culture? A cloud of osmosis a level shrapnel erupts as lightning as it pierces the already thickened air. Pan's Labyrinth Themes. Dodging bullets and evading the poisonous booby traps of the Viet Cong, the American soldiers must take their stand against their communist enemy.
Blindly firing their weapons into the lush jungles of Vietnam, the soldiers look for a faint sign of hope that this war will be won and they will be able to gay couples be allowed to adopt, go home. The men, who are on average only 19 years old, clutched the pictures of their loved ones in pan's themes one hand and fire their weapons with the other. Osmosis A Level. With the pan's labyrinth roar of bullets ricocheting off helmets throughout the night, a few exhausted soldiers manage to block out the ever-present cry of death and sleep for an hour or two before their next volley of bloodshed. As the film Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam depicts, the American soldiers were torn between beliefs. Some soldiers went to the war beleiving it to be the business of their country, to fight wars against the communists. They beleived whole heartedly in the Vietnam war. Ironically, other men didn't even know why they were there. They fought in the war, but did not know why.
Still others didn't believe in the war, but didn't want to have to face their families if they chose to run to Canada. They would have thought it better to stand before a firing squad and die for something that they beleived in, than a war that their consciences fought with a vengeance. Such is the case with Tim O'Brien. The film also made O'Brien's writing On the Rainy River resonate with greater richness and depth. With a bit of background in the Vietnam war, through films and labyrinth themes, stories, I can better understand what O'Brien might have been going through when he received his draft notice; his world nearly ended.
A war he didn't believe in was beckoning for his arrival. So young and not sure if he was to live or die, O'Briend took a cowardly leap into the vast expanse of the treacherous rice fields. One thing that O'Brien does to prepare for the near battle, is to work in Essay about The Censorship Children's Books a slaughtering house. Seeing the pictures that the film presents, this is pan's labyrinth themes, a wise choice by O'Brien to nulify his senses to the carnage he would soon be facing.
